Cross Country Endorsement courses are run continuously at Yarrawonga Flight Training. Two days of lectures and hands on exercises sound academically intensive, but the class room atmosphere is light and enjoyable. Comprehensively prepared and run by CFI Peter McLean (Ex-RAAF pilot) courses attract pilots and students from all aspects of aviation, including GA pilots.

As you know having a recreational Pilot Licence only allows you to fly within 25nm radius from the airfield from which the aircraft normally operates.

It is a great feeling to be in air and we all know that by now. Whether you got involved in flying for the sensation of defeating gravity, the excitement, visual experience, fun and adventure or some other reason; you will soon want to take full advantage of new possibilities. If you want to venture further into the surrounding landscape, tow your aircraft for holidays and take off from other locations or simply make flying trips to destinations of your choice, you need to know how to do it safely and efficiently; (not to mention legally!)

We all know how useful a GPS device is, but it cannot replace knowledge that you must have on cross country trips. You need to prepare properly for flights even if during the flight the GPS takes the role of your magnetic compass. You also need to know how to use aeronautical charts, how to interpret weather charts and forecasts etc. Just as we learn and practice emergency landings for the unlikely event of engine failure, we also need to know how to navigate in the unlikely case of GPS failure.

A theory/in-class hands on practical course is run over two days 9am to 5pm with coffee and lunch breaks. We run night time courses starting with a pizza dinner followed by 3 to 4 hours of theory, during the week. Or we sometimes run individual, part time courses after flying lessons when time permits.

Navigation theory classes and exam costs per person, is $350. However, if you are doing your full time training at YFT the theory training is included in your flight training fees. You could look on it as being FREE.

Materials and resources required for course are:

    Aeronautical charts and publications:

    VTC Canberra / Albury

    VNC 1 Melbourne

    ERCLOW 1-2

    WAC 3470 Melbourne & WAC 3457 Canberra

    ERSA spiral bound

Rotating Plotter or Protractor ATC, and Scale Ruler 180 NM
CX-2 navigation computer or Graphic Flight Computer JE6-B or E6-BP
    - Knee Board (used at stage two – practical navigation flights)

To fulfil the Operations Manual requirements for the issue of an XC Endorsement each student has to have practical navigation flights.

For the cost of this component practical navigation flight with an instructor and solo navigation flight, are part of YFT’s day to day operations and costs are the same as the initial flight training.
