    Art on a Chart

    Monday, January 28th, 2013
ERC Low #1One of the local pilots, Glenda, has taken up the idea of using old ERC charts (others know them as sector charts) as a base for creating artistic images relating to the chart.
ERC Low #1 – Hay Plain in flood
Mixed media on primed ERC Low charts, 50×50 cm.
If you get close to the drawings, you can see the navigation information on the charts, underlying the drawings themselves.
These images are a pilot’s view of the world; the charts on which they are  drawn are from the same region of the landscape drawn, and show us things our eyes can’t see (radio frequencies, air space boundaries, airways and route data).
As pilots we operate in a three dimensional world and “see” our world in many different ways: the surface of the land below us and our communication network in the atmosphere around us.
Planning to do more of them so I have a series: may be in an exhibition someday!!!

    Snow Mail 2013

    Monday, January 21st, 2013

A short flight to document my “snow mail” message scooped in the fresh snow.
Also the first flight of 2013! ….can’t think of a better way to fight the Illinois winter blues.
Music by Lenny Kravitz (what a great song, surely he’s a trike pilot at heart)

30404Bionix Thirteen First of Type in Australia

With type certifications through and registration approved by both RAAus and CASA, test flights begin. Chris took Tanarg 8264 up for its first flight  and we couldn’t get the smile off his face when he returned to Hangar 19. It was then Peter’s turn. On takeoff, with no traffic around, Peter conducted a 30431360 degree climbing turn over the runway. This proved he was happy with the performance and handling. After doing a number of turns, climbs, stalls and general checking of the performance of this beautiful machine, it was time to take Anne for a flight.

These are her first thoughts … The aircraft is different, and I am scared of heights! Having more room in the back, I felt less secure than in the Arrow. I said to Peter, “I wonder how I will go in 30416turbulence?” Considerately, Peter promptly “stirred the pot” shaking us all over the place!!! I know I will get used to it , and the seat is very comfortable, although I found the Enigma Glass cockpit instrument so fascinating that I found myself sitting more upright than the seat wanted me to (it’s more an armchair type posture). Stupidly, I moved my feet,…because I could, (BIG plus) and I inadvertently placed my foot on the foot throttle peg. Soon Peter said quietly, “Looks like we have a stuck throttle!” I settled in to experience a less than comfortable descent to the airfield, and in doing so, I moved one foot a little. Lo! and behold! the throttle was no longer stuck…! I was told that the throttle peg could be  either removed or folded away somehow, so it wouldn’t cause a problem each time we flew together. Whew!  I love the look of the aircraft, and the sound of the 100 hp engine, and I will certainly learn to adjust to my new ride.

What’s in the box? … Part Two

30301Peter and Chris headed to Tullamarine Airport this morning to pick up “The Boxes”. The drive down to Melbourne went smoothly, along with the pickup, followed by a two and a half hour drive home. After backing the trailer into Stan’s hangar, it was a matter of opening the largest box, then Chris, Stan and Peter began to assemble the new Tanarg.

This new Air Creation Tanarg is First of Type in Australia, with the 100hp Rotax engine, the  Stratomaster Enigma glass cockpit and the new Bionix Thirteen wing, which has had all the glowing reviews in Europe. Everthing in the box was well padded with no damage to the aircraft despite being air freighted from France to Australia in a Boeing 747.

30328It felt like Christmas to see the new machine, assembled and sitting on the hangar floor. Tomorrow the second box will be opened and the Bionix 13 wing will be assembled. Anne can’t wait to see how it looks…one more sleep!
