    Aircraft Radio

    Why Aircraft have Radios…

10 Cirrus Panel aIn my flying career, almost every aircraft I have flown has had a flight radio. So basically, I have been brought up with a radio in each and every aircraft … except my hang gliders.

I hear some pilots say that radios are a waste of time and money, and they serve no real purpose….. Well this is fine, and CASA allow aircraft to operate at certain altitudes and from certain airfields without radio. Most of the ag pilots I knew around my area didn’t have a working VHF radio, until June the 3rd this year.

So why have a radio? A flight radio gives you, the pilot, the chance to eavesdrop on the airwaves, … to establish who is in the area, what the weather is doing, and in an emergency, you have a means of telling someone where you are.

9280X-Ray Tango Flight gains a Wing Man

Ken completed his formation endorsement last evening, and this morning he was involved in a four aircraft formation flight. His comment, when back on the ground, was, ” That was the cherry on the the top of the icing on the cake!!”

30173Other members of X-Ray Tango Flight were Willie, Gary, and CFI Peter. Ken’s new nickname should be Velcro Ken, as he, (Number Four) flew as if he was attached to Number Three aircraft  by Velcro (NOT just a string). This is not to be confused with Willie “Stuck to me like glue” who was Number Two aircraft, because, when Number One looked around, Willie was always in tight formation. It was another great flight…

    Formation Landing Training.

8287This week has been a very busy week for formation training. Yesterday was Ken’s turn to start landing in formation, instead of a streamed landing. After a number of low passes down the runway it was time to commit to a full stop landing. What a thrill. He has also flown Number Three spot now, and during the de-brief remarked that he now knew what formation flying was all about, because he could see both aircraft in formation in front of his aircraft, instead of just the lead aircraft.  Ken has been flying formation very tidily.

    Formation Training Continues

30078Two sessions of formation training yesterday saw a two and a three aircraft formation flight over the lake at Yarrawonga. This morning, more sessions were planned, but unfortunately thunderstorms got in the way, and with 27 mls of rain falling in an hour it would have been a little difficult to carry out the briefs!! Ken is experiencing a whole new world of flying disciplines, and his considerable experience is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

Ian flies in the XT-912 Arrow.

P1070426-YarrawongaIan, from Western Australia, arrived at Hangar 19 last week, and decided to go for a fly in one of our XT-912 Arrows. What a flight! It was a beautiful afternoon and Ian and CFI Peter had a great flight up the Murray River and then along the Ovens River before turning back to Yarrawonga. Ian took a number of photos and made some fantastic memories.
