    YFT Microlight Student goes Solo.

    Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Kyle joins the ranks of recent YFT SOLO-men.

Kyle, our most recent SOLO man.

Kyle, our most recent SOLO man.

It has been four weeks since Kyle last had a flying lesson. First illness, then snowed under with work, this morning he rang to see if it was possible to have a lesson. I suggested he arrive after lunch, as we were busy until then, so he did, and pulled his trike from the back of the hangar, where it had gravitated because it wasn’t being used. He pre-flighted it and Peter pull-started the neat and clean 582 blue-head with its Wizard Three wing. An hour later, after being put through his paces by Peter, we suddenly and unexpectedly saw “the legs” get out of the trike at the end of  the runway. Kyle was being sent Solo. He flew a circuit and landed well. Paperwork was completed, and Kyle became yet another Pilot-in-Command. He went into town to buy some more fuel, then went up for a local flight by himself, to just enjoy the flying and the scenery without having his instructor always pushing his skill level a little higher. Time for more of that next lesson! Congratulations Kyle for a job well done.

    Darcy goes Solo

    Darcy:"Solo Man!"

    Darcy:"Solo Man!"

Darcy O’Bryan, 16, flew his first solo flight in a YFT Airborne XT-912 SST Tundra today. Darcy was one of our Junior Marshals, and is now working towards becoming a diesel engineer. He missed out on a GYFTS scholarship and worked hard to fund his own flying(with subsiding from YFT) by working two jobs after school until he had sufficient savings to be able to do several flying lessons close together.  Peter and Anne congratulate him on his efforts and are proud to see him achieve his first goal in flying solo.

    Three young lads fly today

    Student Pilot, Cade.

    Student Pilot, Cade.

Cade, who hadn’t flown for two months, was first up this morning. He did a number of circuits with the precision of a seasoned pilot.Cade flew YFT’s latest aquisition, which doesn’t have a name yet, but has been known to be called “The Dark Side”.Cade recently had a flight in a Cessna 172 and noted that he didn’t think the pilot did a proper warm-up, and after flying around in the aircraft, he remarked that he preferred to fly the trike, because it handled better and had better visibility.

Next to fly was Kieran, 15, who is hoping to become a commercial pilot one day. He had his first flight and completed his first hour of training with a very good landing. Kieran’s mum is very supportive of his goal of becoming a pilot, and was very happy to see the smile on her son’s face after he completed his flight.

Last flight of a busy day was reserved for Darcy, who flew so well that if the daylight hadn’t disappeared, he could have gone solo.

Jenny and Kel, aka. “Neville”, was awarded Best Trike at the NATFLY dinner on Saturday evening. Dave, who was presenting the awards, found it hard to read the writing on the sheet listing the various awards. Kelvin somehow became “Neville” and this was perpetuated throughout the evening. Congratulations “Neville”!

    YFT at Temora 2011

    YFT setting up at Temora

    YFT setting up at Temora

After the fog lifted at Yarrawonga on Thursday, Peter, Kel and Jenny flew their Airborne XT 912 Tundras to Temora, while Anne drove Kel’s ute with banners, stock and personal gear on board.

A much appreciated offer of accommadation for the weekend, by Barry and Dawn Mc Pharlane of “Hangar J” was taken up. We unloaded and set up when Anne finally arrived, on Thursday afternoon.

peter and ann 2Although numbers of visiting aircraft and people were well down on last year, probably due to weather, it proved to be a good time to meet with old and new aquaintances as well as to promote  YFT and sell aviation goods to pilots of all persuasions.

The weather at Temora was great, but it was very noticeable that there were less pilots flying from sun-up…. are we all getting old???

David from Orange Completes His Fifth Hour in Two Days

David in one of YFT's XT-912 SST aircraft.

David in one of YFT's XT-912 SST aircraft.

Arriving on Friday 15th April David got stuck into flying lessons immediately. By the end of Saturday 16th April he had completed five hours in the air and two hours theory training and is loving every minute of it.

He made a short trip into Yarrawonga yesterday looking for some footwear that allowed him to feel the rudder pedals better and arrived back a very happy man. For just $12 he had secured himself a pair of Rivers “ugg ” type boots, with the added bonus of keeping his feet warmer too!
